The purpose of the Academy is to allow students to explore interest in the Health Science field or in the area of Cybersecurity while in high school and gain unique experiences to prepare them for the workforce, community college or four year university.

Students in all Health Sciences Academy Pathways will meet the NC High School Graduation requirements in four years, while also earning 19-37 college credit hours towards their particular pathway.

For Students Currently Attending Gaston County Schools 

• To apply: Students must be in good standing in the areas of academics, attendance and behavior. 
• For final acceptance: Students must complete their 8th grade year in good standing in the areas of academics, attendance, and behavior. Meaning, students must show they are capable of earning the required 2.8 GPA for admission into Gaston College classes, demonstrate their commitment to timeliness to be at college classes, clinicals and work experience on time and with little to no absences, and the ability to consistently and independently make good choices in various learning and work environments. 

Gaston County residence who did not attend a Gaston County School

• To apply: Applicants must provide (if applicable) 7th grade State Test Scores, attendance records and discipline records if available. They must also provide a final 7th grade report card and first semester 8th grade report card and attendance records. Thus indicating they are in good standing in the areas of academics, attendance and behavior.

Incoming ninth grade students may apply.  Rising tenth grade students may apply and will be accepted if seats are available

All students wanting to be in the academy must submit an application in Scribbles. Students are selected by lottery. Students must indicate their preferred pathways when they apply for the lottery. Each pathway has a select number of seats. See seating numbers in question 7. 

Parent/Legal Guardian must maintain residency in Gaston County. Students must remain in good standing including appropriate attendance, behavior, and academics. Throughout the program, students must meet admission requirements for the College Now Program (formerly Career & College Promise) as outlined by Gaston College.

The Health Sciences Academy will offer courses in the following pathways:  Foundations of Health & Fitness Science (15 seats), Foundations of Healthcare (30 seats), Foundations of Medical Assisting (15 seats), and Cybersecurity (20 seats).

Students in the Academy will be in classes together for specific courses aligned to their pathways. Since East Gaston is a comprehensive high school, non-Academy courses are scheduled based on students’ individual needs. Courses include but are not limited to college classes, AP classes, honors classes, ROTC classes, Fine Arts classes, and academic electives offered within each department. 
 

Students in the Health Sciences Academy will have unique field trip opportunities based on their career pathways, internships following their junior year, and volunteer opportunities with various partnerships.

Currently, these include: CPR, Stop The Bleed Certificate, Cisco CCNA,COMPTIA Network+, COMPTIA Security +, Information Technology - Information Systems Certificate, Biotechnology - Foundations of Healthcare Certificate, Gaston College Pathway Completion Certificate and Honors stole at Graduation.

Students may be dropped off at 7:40am (doors open at 8:00 am) and must be picked up by 4:00 p.m. if not involved in an after school program. 

Transportation to and from school will be the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian unless the student resides in the East Gaston attendance zone.

Students will be exposed to a full high school experience and may participate in any activity offered at EGHS. Many of our Health Science Academy students are athletes, members of the band, chorus, or ROTC, and participate in many areas of student life at East Gaston.
